To solve to Earth's atmospheric quandaries, the best place to look may well be down -- way down. CCS and Geothermal energy are often touted as mid and long term solutions, respectively, to the world's Greenhouse Gas problem, and both technologies are dependent on processes occurring deep beneath the Earth's surface. Discussion of each, however, tends to talk about subsurfaces processes either matter-of-factly or only at a superficial level. This can lead to half-truths and misconceptions.  This presentation will attempt to shed light on what actually lies behind your feet, what are the geologic processes key to each solution, and what are the potential side-effects of either. From there, we will move into an analysis of the current prospects for each solution in China and what are the next steps towards bringing either idea to life.

**About the speaker (演讲人简介)**

Logan West is a researcher at the Tsinghua University--BP Center for Clean Energy Research and Education. He is supported in part by World Resources Institute, and is currently assisting in the writing of the CCS Guidelines for China. Logan hails from Little Rock, AR and comes to Beijing via Princeton University where he was an undergraduate in the Geosciences department. Originally in Beijing teaching english, Logan spent time interning at the National Resources Defense Council researching geothermal energy before moving to the Tsinghua-BP Center.
